The following story was sent in by a member of our OTH website: great story!
Last Saturday morning, my buddy Bo Warren and I were trolling for stripers in the Chesapeake Bay. We were 1½ miles offshore in about 80 feet of water contemplating why the fish weren't biting. We looked back to check our gear and saw something odd in the water. Was it a seal?? Can't be, we don't have seals around here. On closer look, it turned out to be a buck deer that was WAY off course. He was desperate and barely staying afloat.
I've seen deer swim a river or bayou before. When you see that, the first thing you notice is that they are powerful swimmers. Their head and shoulders are out of the water and they make surprisingly good headway. This critter was just keeping his nose up and looked like he'd been swimming all night long. In fact, he was so worn out that he swam toward the boat probably thinking it looked enough like land to him. When he got closer though, he wasn't sure what to make of the two dudes on board, and backed off.
So, since the fish weren't biting, we thought we'd give this buck a hand.
Turns out Bo grew up around cows and was really handy with a bowline. He lassoed the deer on the first try! Bo grabbed his neck, I grabbed the flank, and we barreled over backwards into the boat. Before I knew it, Bo was on top of him and had him tied up just like a calf.
We hit the throttle and shuttled him to the closest beach - Kent Point. I beached the boat and we carefully unloaded the deer onto the sand. The whole time we kept thinking he was going to kick the snot out of us. He never did though; he was totally spent. We untied him and jumped back. Too weak to stand, he just sat there quivering. We even picked him up again and put his feet underneath him, but he still couldn't walk. Don't know if he made it or not, but I think his chances were vastly improved. Hopefully he recovered after time. When you're out & about, ya just never know...
Guys, awesome stories, love to see you taking the time to add your input and tales! Congrat's on the first Tuna, funny about the expensive gear (your right!) and all the rest, great stuff. Thanks for posting and keep'm comin!

I bought an 11' tica rod with a quantum 60 boca reel. I put 200 yards of 30# test braided line on the reel. Wife and I went fishing one night and after the 10th cast with this $260.00 unit, the line tangled. I was pissed and cut out the tangled section and thrugh the pole in the back of my truck and left. I decided, while on the way home, to go to another fishing spot to see if anyone was there. I decided to try again but instead I grabbed my $17.00 Walmart pole and after the 3rd cast I caught a 32" striper.
Keeper size in R.I. is 28" but I let him go.
It was a Saturday night at our local park and I and my Labrador were bank fishing. I through a top water lure that the Lab wanted to run down. Then out of know where came the strike and a bent rod. The Lab was on it before I could set the hook. She had the tail in her mouth and I had the mouth hooked up. We were both wild as we carried the fish home to weigh. We saw a friend and stopped and weight the fish at 5Lbs and 8ozs. There were pics taken and the fish was prepared for mounting. It was 22" long so figure the cost. Sunday morn there was a question directed at me from the youth director from children's time that was,"Where did you catch that fish?" the response was "in the mouth the dog had the tail". Needless to say it was a time before order could be restored and the service continued.
Fished hard past two days for the first new stripers of the year. Fished pleasant cove catching over forty stripers before dark. All soft plastics worked slow, fish all over great day on the water good to be back in the swing of things. With the weather as it has been first keepers of the year are not for off the horizon. Tight lines to all!
when i got my first tuna was the day i started to like tolling fishing.me and my dad and some friends when trolling to the diominican republic we were trolling for every thing wahoo, dolphing.marlin, sailfish, sharks, tuna, alvacore every thing and every body started catching fish but me i changed my bait like 3 times until i see a fish trying to grab my bait so im geting kind of exited but when the fish grabs they bait i try to hook him but i pulld to hard so i took the bait out of his mouth so i waited for him to hited again wen he did that i try to hook him again and i finally got him that fish gave me 3 hour fight i was baout to cut the line because i was way to tired but then the fish was tired so i bring him to the boat and i se this hudge tuna standin write in front of me i was i about to die jajaja but when my dad hit him with the gaff he took of again but not for long but when we got him on the boat we weight him and that tuna was 115lb after that day trolling was my favorite fishing.
Wife says to me (just now, at dinner),"What did you put on the fish?" "Nothin'" I said, "just a little salt and pepper, a dash of garlic powder, and a little paprika." (baked in glass cassarole at 375 for 20 mins, turn once). I said it was the blackfish, naturally aromatic and sweet. Son and future daughter-in-law say it smells like cinnamon, "but real good!" At this point I went to the spice cabinet and looked at the orange spice I sprinkled over the fillets. Yep!, Surer than spit it was cinnamon! Was pretty tasty! I did have seconds. But if you try my "Cinnamon Tautog" recipe, go extremely light on the cinnamon!
Fished today early high tide at barnstable harbor waded along edges by scudder ln. 10 schoolies in about half hr. cold but the fish are still around. Football tuna were in harbor over past couple days chasing mackrel.fish on.....
Just got back in from light tackle schoolie fishing on cape cod bay. We walked about 1 mile along the sesuit creek area.We caught about 30-40 small guys with the biggest about 20 inches. Non stop action in a few places. All soft plastics matching bait in the area.
I was tied up at the dock last summer and decied to hang a chunk of mackeral off the bow of my boat while we cleaned up. I forgot all about it whe about 2:OOAM I was roused from a sound sleep by a clicking noise. It took me a minute to figure out that my line was taking off on the rod I'd left out. I jumped out of the cabin and set the hook on a 33" striper that was headed back to sea. My friends really regret not getting a photo of me in my jockeys pulling in that bass.
when fishing with my grandsons,it takes a certain amount of courage, faced with the fact that when casting weed lines, and working cranks under the pads and such it becomes a bit of overload to a four year old,and his first cousin, who is five, grandpa with the box truck stay on the pier, waiting for there return, and the arrival of grandson #2 casting a mini spinner with two day old gulp on the hook, thinking i will just observe the action, too my suprize,a 4lb.+ walleye decided to hook up.darn neer every thing done wrong,he still wanted sonething to eat in a channel filled with bait fish,we enjoyed fish on the shore that day,as the boys ask me for every detail
About two years ago I went to a local tackle shop to buy a Ugly Stik - Penn reel combo. Couldn't decide if I should get heavy action pole with 7500 reel or mediun action with 6500 reel. Opted for heavy rod and reel. Got to fishing spot for stripers and after three or four casts realizes I should of gotten lighter set up. Just then I look directly in front of me and there it was in about three feet of water, a medium action Ugly Stik with 6500 reel on it. Swear to God....Took pole home, took her apart, greased her up and we were good to go. Pole and reel were in mint condition beside salt water that had got in. Now I have heard of good luck charms but ever heard of a pole?? This pole has caught more fish than you can imagine from salmon to snook. Regardless of what Im fishing for this pole is not far from my side. I will send pictures to prove it ...... Good Fishing!!!
P.S. Dave love the show
We KILLED 'EM last saturday night into sunday morning.
My buddy and I boated 3 Keepers 28", 29" and my 31" 10.6lbs ended up taking the pot that night. We must have boated 50-60 stripers most between 19" and 26". All the keepers were caught between 11:15 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. . The fishing was ridiculous between 10:30 and 2 a.m. . Chunk bait and clams were the cure.

Hello, everyone.
I am traveling to the Cape next week. Staying in a house on Old Wharf Road in Dennis Port. Looking forward to fishing from the beach across from our house.
Any tips???? Are the waters deep enough to fish from the beach? Are Stripers or Blues running? What bait would you recommend?
Thanks, any information would be greatly appreciated.
me and my papa were out fishing at a spot near lovels island. we got there at around 5 am and fished until 1 pm. we were had a chum slick of herrin going and we were also drifting chunks of herrin. so around 6:00 i put my rod down for a second to get a drink and i see my rod getin wacked out of the corner of my eye. so i grab my rod and set the hook and as im doing this the rod holder is fallin in the water. so im setting the hook with what felt like a cow on the end of my line with one hand and luckly grabbing the rod holder with the other. so i landed the fish and it measured out to be 37 inches and 18 pounds. not bad for a kid huh;)

I went Fishing at Dennisport Beach in the Cape got in a fight with a bluefish for about 20 min the fish was about 31in 9lbs i never used a boat i/ve fished inshore all my life
SOME OF YOU MAY APPRECIATE THIS STORY DUE TO THE HIGH COST OF SOME TACKLE. A FEW YEARS AGO I WAS FISHING WITH MY WIFE, SISTER IN LAW, AND MY BROTHER IN LAW ON HIS 22 FOOT ROBALO OFF OF P. TOWN AT CAPE COD. I HAD ALREADY GONE THRU A COUPLE OF UMBRELLA RIGS THAT DUE TO THE BIG SCHOOLS OF BLUEFISH THAT WERE AROUND. WE WERE TROLLING TWO LINES WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN WE CAME INTO A BIG SCHOOL OF STRIPERS. MY BROTHER IN LAW HOOKED UP A DOUBLE ON HIS UMBRELLA RIG AND SO DID I. HOWEVER MY LINE HAD A COUPLE OF BLUEFISH. I DECIDED TO LET MY WIFE REEL THEM IN. WHEN THEY GOT CLOSE TO THE BOAT I REACHED FOR THE LEADER AND AS WHILE I WAS BRINGING THE FISH ABOARD THE LINE BROKE. MY RIG AND THE FISH FELL BACK INTO THE WATER. WITHOUT HESITATION I DOVE INTO THE WATER. THE FISH STARTED TO SWIM DOWN WITH MY RIG. I SWAM DOWN AFTER THEM AND AT ATOUND 10-12 FEET I REACHED FOR MY RIG AND GRABBED IT. I SWAM BACK TO THE SURFACE WITH MY RIG, THE FISH STILL ATTACHED, AND A HOOK SLIGHTLY STUCK IN THE BACH OF MY ARM. WELL YOU CAN JUST IMAGINE THE LOOKS OF MY FAMILY WHEN I SURFACED. I WAS NOT ABOUT TO PEND ANOTHER 15-20 DOLARS ON A NEW RIG BECAUSE OF A COUPLE OF FRESH BLUEFISH.
I am trying to add a picture to my profile but the file is too large. I shrank the phot down to the smallest I could but it was still too big. Any suggestions?
About eight years ago my fishing buddy and I run into a blue fish bliz next to the old Rocky Point Park. The bait fish were breaking all around us and the gulls were going after them. After reeling in what I thought was a large blue a gull broke the surface about twenty feet from the boat it was attached to my line. It started to fly up in the air so I cut it some slack and bounced the line I was gald to see the bird break free. As the Atom Popper hit the water behind the boat a very large blue hit it. What a day.

All my other lines broke from snagging on rocks last year when I was on my boat. All I had left was my ultra light pole for trout fishing in streams back home. it was the end of the day so I decided why not ill have some fun. Not 5 seconds after I cast do I get a hit. With little line left I start to gain on the fish. 10 minutes later I pull in a 25 in blue fish.
........One day when I was fishing I wasn't having any luck catching any type of fish. I was hoping to catch a smallmouth bass. After about 2 hours I decided that this would be my last cast before I went home with nothing. I casted near the weeds and started to get some bites, but nothing exciting. Then I felt this huge tug on my rod it almost pulled me into the water! I started reeling-in really fast. I couldn't reel in anymore then 5 inches. It felt as if a big truck was at the end of my line. The fish wouldn't come any closer to me, so I decided to get closer to the fish. I started up the troller-motor and off I went very slowly. When I got about 7 feet away from the fish, I realized that my line was just caught around a big boulder in the water.

One cloudy day at 12:00 noon I was really bored. So I grabbed my tackle and rod, and headed down to the Lake. I cut down some trees' and built a wooden boat. I then built a paddle and started rowing out. When i was about 4 miles out into the lake I started feeling wet. I looked down and realized a piece of the wood was rotted. Water slowly started entering the boat. I couldn't think of what to do, so I opened my tackle-box and pulled out a bunch of rubber worms. I started filling the hole with bait. By the time I was done I had realized I was late for my mental theropy appointment.
If you want to have a peaceful day on the water this summer or perhaps youll like to end your vacation with a memorable fishing trip One that youre sure never to forget. well heres what you do launch your boat in boston and go to faun bar on the ocean side of winthrop Right in front of the deer island water treatment plant Look for the 6a bouy that marks the bar In front and all around you will see a recreation of one histories greatest moments what is it you ask D-day the invasion of normandy if its a slow day there will only be 368 boats out on the bar, Youll see all kinds of great fishing techniquies like how to run another guys lines over and how to take leadcore line out of your propellers As well as the lobster pot obstacle course And one of my favorites The old your in my chum slick routine Yessir faun bar on a nice saturday in august nothing like it
One time while taking a bath I felt something rush by leg, it then bumped me as if to see if I was a fish or not, or better yet it's prey. I calmy sat upright so that this creature had plenty of room to move around within the tub, and slowly grabbed my 50 weight trolling gear. I then saw the monster breach, clearly scouring the surface for baitfish. I quickly let out about 2 feet of 200 pound test and began trolling a green machine in the soapy water. In no time at all the behemoth slammed the bait sending a jolt through-out my body that started at my finger tips and raced down to my toes like a bolt of lightening. I fought the beast for about 2 hours before landing it along side the tub, resting it on the floor mat below. I quickly reached for the magazine rack to retrieve my filet knife and went to work. In no time at all I had the fish quartered, fileted and rolled with seaweed and sticky rice on a soft bed of noodles, dipped in wasabi & soy sauce and relaxed to the freshest, most suckulent Sushi I've ever eaten. As I leaned back into the warm suddsy water, I smiled and thought, "wow it's time for my medication".
