Tuna Day - 2006/09/21 10:26
Fished Crab Ledge area last Saturday, plenty of boats around and a few fish seen busting early in the morning. Speaking of busting, if you head out in fog, please make sure you have Radar...a good fishing buddy had a run in with a boat who either forgot how to use it, or was to busy doing something else and slammed right into his boat. Both are lucky to still be around to fish another day...
Anyway, back to the report. No hit's all morning, a few sightings kept us "near" the pack. Decided to get away from the pack and find some fish that weren't spooked by all the draggers as well as squid bars being dragged around. Put in almost 2 hours of searching before we found some life.. half beaks being chased out of the water, a few mola's, basking sharks, pilot whales, birds and oh ya....TUNA! Lot's of small schools all aorund for a good two miles...after seeing the Half Beeks (for those who haven't seen these, they look just like a Ballyhoo)I pulled out the spreader bars and went to a single lure spread of skirted and unskirted hoo's....WHAM, dialed in and the fun began. In all, had 9 hit's...boated 7.. Also saw a bunch of fish on the bottom and after casting to breaking fish with no results decided to drop the 4 oz jig to the bottom (150ft) and try it out, within minutes, FISH ON and another awesome battle!
Don't get hung up in the crowd, go find some fish...they're out there and sometimes the pack drives them just a few miles away from the crowd of boats...but they are there....
