Keeping eels alive - 2005/09/23 23:08 Hi John,

I happened to be flipping through the channels today and caught the last part of a episode that featured the guys fishing off Block Island. I am familiar with the spot you guys were in and have the seen the FV ADrianna putting in and Mike always seems to have good sized fish. Anyway, as this is our fisrt season fishing with eels, I happened to notice your advice about the "3 pail method" for keeping eels alive, but missed the start of your advice. Any chance you could give it again?

Thanks,

Bob

Re:Keeping eels alive - 2005/09/26 20:27 Hi Bob,
Allow me to answer this since it was I who made the eel bucket.
Basically it's 3 buckets. Two with holes punched in the bottom, one without, which is the bottom bucket and act's as a "catch-all" for their slime.

In the top bucket goes the ice, plenty of it. In the second bucket, or middle bucket, goes the eels. On top of the eels place a burlap bag, paper towels or even a regular piece of towel or seaweed. Basically anything to hold them down and absord the cold water drips from the ice dripping down from the top bucket.

The last bucket is to catch their slime coat. Empty this bucket once or twice during the day.

Basically the idea behind this method is that eels will suffocate in their own slime coat if not properly removed. Eels like to be cool and survive better in cooler temps. In the 3 bucket system, your allowing cool water to drip down on top of the eels and at the same time that cool water runs over them, thus removing the excess slime they produce. The slime drips down through the holes is their bucket and into the third or bottom bucket.

Doing this keeps them cool and get's rid of their slime. Caring for your bait before throwing it to the wolves to be eaten is a good thing! Good luck.

Also, please post these types of questions in the salt water forums. Thanks!
