Tails 8/4-8/5 - 2007/08/08 10:01
Got a late start Saturday, not leaving the dock until 11. seas were 3-5 with winds a good 15kn, which made for a slow ride out to the fishing grounds. finally reached the flat nne of the tails about 4. slowest steam ever!! about 2miles before the numbers, we decided to set up the spread. 8 rods using a combination of spreader bars, green machines, ballyhoo and jet heads. within 20-30min we get the first knock down on the outside starboard rigger...spreader bar. 30 seconds later, another knock down, this on the port outside rigger...another spreader bar. double header resulted in two YFT in the 70lb+ class. needless to say, we were very excited to see these bigger fish in the boat!! lines back in trolling the flat, slowly making our way down to the tails where we were going to tie up for the chunk. about an hour before sunset, another knockdown on the outside rigger spreader bar, resulting in another 70lb class YFT. 3-3 on the troll before the chunk began. tied up around 830 around the se of the tails and immediately began chunking. within 20 minutes we had mahi all around the boat. boated 6 in no time. within 45 min of the chunking, we got hit on the 50' rod. nice fight for 10min when the hook pulled. rebaited and dropped down. started to mark fish from 120'up to 30'. another YFT hooked up. this time fish was bigger, 80+. 4 YFT in the box and it's not even 10pm. all the while, i'm thinking about how great this trip has been....started canyon fishing only 4 years ago and this bar far has been the most productive trip for YFT ever(for me!!) we had YFT in our slick all night long. every fish boated had either 4"/6" squid in their bellies as well as our chunk bait!! I recall one fish with nothing but our chunk, seems he had been feeding for a long while before finally eating the wrong bait! lol!! this action continued all night long. slowed down in the early morning before sunrise. as the sun rose, we ran out of chunk and started on the troll. immediately knock down of a LFT in the 40lb class. trolled the tails with no action until 830 when we had another knock down...wouldn't you know it, outside rigger spreader bar. got to the rod, only to see about a 1/4 spool left. big fish pulling a lot of line, quickly!! 20 minutes later, we gained line on the fish and had it leadered, but this fish was far from giving up. it takes off, pulling with it a good 1/2 spool of line. finally back at the boat, we see it's a YFT in the 100+lb class...excitement grew, the fish ran again, only to have the hook pulled. damn!! ok, lines in, we're heading back.
first overnight trip of the year for me and by far the most exciting!!
11 YFT 1 LFT 8 Mahi
Heading out to The Bank on Monday in search for BFT.
